With ‘Flu pandemics becoming more prevalent year by year it is essential for everyone to take whatever steps they can to avoid it or treat it. It is a priority to ensure that we are getting a sufficient amount of Vitamin C.

One of the best sources of this vitamin is the Kiwi fruit. It is convenient too, being much smaller than an orange and without a thick skin to peel. It has more Vitamin C than an orange and contains around 46 calories.

Not only will a

Kiwi fruit supply your Vitamin C requirements for the whole day, but it is rich in potassium, Vitamin E, manganese and beta-caratene. Therefore, apart from protection from ‘flu’, they also have antioxidant properties and some reports claim that they help relieve osteo-arthritis and asthma and the dietry fibre can help lower blood cholesterol levels. It is a very good little fruit to put in your shopping basket even if there is not a pandemic raging through the world.

The easiest way to eat the fruit is to treat it like a boiled egg. Slice off the top and spoon out the inside. Or you can simply eat it whole. The skin is thin with small hairs. It is a very plain packaged fruit but, like

a book, you should not judge it by its cover. Inside you will find soft green flesh with a sweet centre surrounded by tiny black seeds. Slices of Kiwi are very attractive and used to decorate salads and deserts, such as Pavlova.

Interestingly the fruit is a native of China and was introduced to New Zealand in 1904 by a lady after she had visited her sister who was a missionary to the Chinese. It was originally called a Chinese Gooseberry, but later renamed in honor of the Kiwi bird which is a national emblem of New Zealand.

If you are not familiar with the Kiwi fruit it is a small egg shaped fruit covered in a thin brown ‘fuzzy’ skin. It should be slightly soft to the touch, but, if not, can be ripened quickly in a paper bag with bananas or some other mature fruit. It tastes so good you will never want to pop a Vitamin C pill again. So be sure to buy enough to last you for the week. Happy Healthy eating!
